We celebrated Halloween this past Saturday night with our Dia De Los Muertos (day of the dead) inspired costumes. We've always loved this Mexican tradition and the costumes that come along with it, so we decided that this year we were going to paint our faces! The great thing about this costume is that we spent no more than $15-20 each instead of the average $50-80 like previous years. We also knew we'd find something in our closets to work with as far as clothes go, and the rest was just hair, makeup and accessories which is always fun for us girls anyway.

As you probably can imagine after looking at the photos, the make up part is definitely the hardest. It took a total of about two hours and it is a pretty complex step-by-step process, but after watching a tutorial online, we were confident we could pull it off. Ok we'll admit, there was a point (somewhere around the point where our face was white and our eyes were black) when we realized there is a very fine line between this "dia de los muertos" look and you ending up looking more like a mime or raccoon. It was probably the funniest moment we've ever had in the history of Halloween costumes. We looked at each other and started imitating mime moves while laughing hysterically and wondering if this thing was ever going to actually look right. But after it was all said and done, we think we pulled it off pretty well and got all kinds of reactions from people later that night that varied from scared, to amused, to stunned, to being in awe. So needless to say, we think this was one of our best costumes to date, and believe us when we say we've done it all!

On a side note, we hope all of you who are in the DC area or the east coast survived hurricane Sandy ok, and weren't affected by her wrath. We send our warmest wishes to all those who were affected and hope for a fast recovery!

Happy almost Halloween everyone and look out for our Violet Boutique Holiday lookbook tomorrow. It may just get you super excited for the upcoming season of celebration and cheer!

Great makeup, you look awesome and I love the black roses. Cracked me up about the mime moves though, shame you didn't film that!
