True Food Kitchen

The west coast has a tradition of healthy foods. In the east coast, there's an increasing demand for fresh food and that's where True Food Kitchen steps in. Located at the fashionable new Mosaic Shopping Center in Fairfax, VA, it's the perfect place for dinner before or after catching a movie at the Angelika or to have a cocktail after your big purchase from ANTHOM
Carlis and I had the opportunity to attend the soft opening of True Food Kitchen and the experience lived up to the expectations. We began our dinner with cocktails.  We started with the spiced apple sidecar and the ginger margarita.  Both drinks allowed us to welcome fall with their hints of spice. The must have is the ginger margarita; the caramelized orange peel adds a delicious smokiness.
For starter,  we indulged in the Albacore Tataki which had a light spicy kick of radish balanced with lime and avocado.  The gluten-free dish is a light way to start the dinner.  For the main dish, we sampled three dishes: Red Chili Shrimp, Panang Curry, and Turkey Lasagna.  The three dishes are from different regions but they share one thing in common: freshness.  The curry did take me back to Panang Bay in Thailand with its balance of the sweetness of coconut and the spice of curry.  The turkey lasagna was packed with flavor but was not as heavy as your typical lasagna.
Our dinner had a sweet ending as we shared two desserts (too difficult to choose one).  The flourless chocolate cake was dense and filled with flavor.  The vanilla ice cream balanced the rich taste of the cake. Although delicious, we fell in love with the squash pie topped with a dollop of whipped cream.
We sat at the outdoor bar which allowed us to observe the cool,  laid back atmosphere of the restaurant.  We not only enjoyed our meal but also how knowledgeable the staff was about the menu although the restaurant had just opened.  Verdict: worth the drive to the suburbs.
