Events: Amaluna Show + Giveaway

on Aug 23, 2014
Charles William Pelletier / Cirque du Soleil
On August 10th, I had the opportunity to attend the latest Cirque du Soleil show, Amaluna at the National Harbor. I could not think of a better person to go with other than our wonderful food and travel contributor, Jessica of Adventures of the Repatriate. We both had a great experience under the iconic blue and yellow tent of the Cirque du Soliel. During the two hour length of the show, we saw over one hundred and thirty beautifully designed costumes. We were entranced by the peacock feathers, shimmery fabrics, water acrobatics and colorful characters swinging from the trapeze.
"Amaluna is a fusion of the words ama, which refers to “mother” in many languages, and luna, which means “moon”; a symbol of femininity that evokes both the mother-daughter relationship and the idea of goddess and protector of the planet. Amaluna is also the name of the mysterious island where this magical story unfolds". We had such a great time that we are now giving away 4 tickets to a lucky reader for the August 28th show, fill out the form below to enter. We will be announcing the winner August 23rd. GOOD LUCK!

On Wednesday evening we had the pleasure of experiencing the truly spectacular Cirque Du Soleil's TOTEM! It was one of the most beautiful productions I've seen by the company, and it was Carlis' first ever, so it made the experience even more special. Every act was literally breathtaking (every time I watch a Cirque show, I think I hold my breath the entire time), but our favorite had to be the roller skate ice prince and princess doing some sort of crazy sensual routine that gave us some serious goosebumps. Oh and how can we forget about the Italian tourist clown, he seriously had us rolling on the floor ... the outfit, the accent, the camera...hilarious! We think he had a little fashion blogger in him, he did a lot of posing and taking photos in a seriously dramatic outfit ... fun sunnies and all :) We also loved that this particular Cirque show is very organic and truly connects with the human essence -- it was colorful, full of neons and bright colors, as well as raw elements that embodied what TOTEM is all about .. a "fascinating journey of human species from its original amphibian state to its ultimate desire to fly".

As if watching the show wasn't enough excitement, we also got to tour the back stage after the show and learn how all that magic "really" happens. Honestly, there were so many cool facts that it would take a series of posts to talk about them all, but here are a few cool ones:
  • Costumes were designed by the talented Kym Barrett (you might have heard of her famous Matrix costumes)
  • TOTEM artists do their own makeup every single show and it's a serious step-by-step process, but their official sponsor is MAC so hey, can't be that bad right?
  • The Crystal Man's costume is made with 4,500 crystals and mirrors
  • The international cast of TOTEM features 52 world-class acrobats, musicians, singers and actors from 18 different countries
If you have the chance to attend this spectacular production, you really should. It's perfect for a date or even a family outing.  Enjoy and let us know what you think!
