Small Business Saturday: Shop Small in a BIG Way

The holidays are around the corner (yes, it is that time of year) and with that comes the choice of where you'll be doing your shopping. As simple as that answer might be -- "where I'll get the best stuff for the best prices of course", I want to encourage you to think a little bigger this year. We have all seen the efforts by American Express to push the #shopsmall campaign, but we wanted to take it a step further and make our own efforts to get you to think outside the big retailers and online shopping, and encouraging you to shop locally! About two weeks ago, in collaboration with the Old Town Boutique District and our friend Sebastian Marin, we shot this video capturing the essence of what shopping in Old Town Alexandria is all about. The way we see it is simple. It's not just shopping, it's supporting this beautiful community while also finding the perfect gifts. So join us this holiday season and shop small in a BIG way!

Giveaway: A Fun Girls Night Out at Rio Washingtonian!

Last month Rio Washingtonian treated us to a girls night out package and of course we were more than thrilled to spend a Friday night doing all the things we love to do most - shopping and eating.. duh! The fabulous package included gift cards to shop at South Moon Under and Imagine Boutique, dinner for two at Copper Canyon, a live concert during their lake front live event, and flights of wine at FineWine.com. Of course we had to start our evening with shopping so we headed straight to South Moon Under. It was our first time to this location and we were pleasantly surprised by all the great merchandise they carry - remember this insta post? I mean that's like the perfect T isn't it? Unfortunately we didn't make it to our next shopping destination (Imagine boutique) because we weren't aware of the center's shopping hours, but we plan to go back soon to check it out. Dinner at Copper Canyon was delicious! Seriously best salads we've had in a long time - probably mainly due to that delicious rotisserie chicken they put on them (mouth is watering as we speak). We enjoyed the live concert for a few minutes before heading to Finewine.com to get our flights on -- oh and can we say that this wine bar/store is truly a fine establishment. It's been a while since we've had the pleasure to learn so much about wine in such a short period of time - and the selection was absolutely incredible! Whether you're a wine connoisseur or just starting to learn about wines, their staff will help you pick the best bottle for a great price (*confession - we did see a $500 bottle on the shelf and still wondering what that would taste like .. hummm a girl can dream!). H&M's New Store in Dupont Circle

The third DC H&M store near Dupont Circle is now finally open! Make sure to stop by the new store to begin your fall shopping. We had a great time checking out the new fresh merchandise and loved seeing the H&M crew so pumped to help all of their costumers during their shopping experience. We look forward to visiting again soon. The new H&M is located in the former Filene’s Basement space at 1133 Connecticut Avenue, Northwest.

Last Thursday I had the pleasure of attending the preview of the new InStyle x Nine West's fall 2014 collection. The event was hosted by Leah Karp, the accessories director of InStyle Magazine. I briefly spoke to her about the process that went into designing the collection and she mentioned that the number one thing for her is always comfort. She also believes that small details make all the difference and we can totally see that in each style of this collection. Of course, we couldn't resist asking her for her favorite style - she loves the pointed toe pump 'Tessa' in black camo fabric and we can definitely see why. It's the perfect pair to complete any outfit!

Our shopping hot spots + a new Nordstrom Rack!

In prep for NYFW and FNO (Carlis will be covering from NYC and I will stay local in Old Town, Alexandria to support our first EVER FNO) we've been thinking a lot about all of our favorite shopping spots, as well as what we look forward to the most when we have our much needed shopping therapy dates. Carlis and I are big when it comes to "doing it right" (not that there is a wrong way to do some shopping lol) but we try to embrace our time together and make it into a whole day experience -- so a delicious lunch, a post shopping mani/pedi, or happy hour is usually involved in our shopping dates. So we figured to share with you some of our favorite hot spots around the DMV so you too can shop "a la SpicyCandyDC" :)

To kick things off, we usually start with a yummy coffee from one of our favorite coffee shops...below is a beautifully delicious cappuccino from Northside Social in Arlington but we also love lattes from Misha's in Old Town, Alexandria. It's impossible to do any kind of damage without a much needed "pick-me-upper" right?

If we're in Georgetown, we usually end our shopping days with champagne and dessert at Kafe Leopold, or dinner at Cafe Bonaparte. If the weather is not on our side, we tend to shop in Tyson's Corner (this is also the mall where we both held our very first real world jobs in retail!!) So when we found out that a Nordstrom Rack was opening up near by, you can imagine our excitement! The store is opening on Sep 13th across Tyson's Corner mall and the grand opening will host a number of fun giveaways that we just can't resist like the 20 golden hangers that will be hidden throughout the store and can be redeemed for $100 gift cards.  Sign us up! :)
